Columbus Scenes were Burkhart’s bread and butter. ‘Rear of House on Broad St’ represents one of his larger and more regal efforts painted during the War Years. Burkhart spent an exceptional amount of time on this painting, with 27 sessions catalogued on the back of the canvas. The large trees and vine-laden trellises were staples in many of the yards in this part of Columbus. Exhibited at the Emerson Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition, 1970, Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts (now the Columbus Museum of Art), catalog #31. Very good condition.

This is an exceptional example of Burkhart’s work and was painted during his best years. It was exhibited at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts (now the Columbus Museum of Art), 1970, catalog #74. The work is in very good condition.

Very rarely are early examples of Burkhart self-portraits available to the public. This pensive pose captures Burkhart as a robust 35-year-old man. Of the more than 400 self-portraits Burkhart painted over the course of his career, this is one of less than a handful to be exhibited publicly. This wonderful example of the artist was catalog entry #27 at the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts (now the Columbus Museum of Art), 1970. The work is in very good condition.

Although farms and landscapes were a staple of Burkhart’s work, this is an interesting example of the field, although the most prominent feature in the painting takes a back stage to the small farming community tucked behind the trees along the horizon. Burkhart invested 16 sessions, as noted by the hash marks he painted on the back of the canvas. It is also inscribed in pencil, August 1, 1943.
