Emerson Burkhart – ‘West Berlin – April 1960’

Oil on canvas, 27 ½ x 39 ½, signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Price: $2,750

Burkhart was a student of history, and a trip to Berlin would not be complete for him without taking time to paint the ruins from repeated Allied bombings during WW II. This scene was likely painted close to the Berlin Wall. His choice of somber earthy colors reminds us of the ravages of war. Hard shadows evoke memories of the destruction that rained down upon the Third Reich during the last months of the war.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Lady in White Blouse’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20, unsigned.  Excellent condition.

Although not identified, the subject was likely an individual Burkhart encountered while on an ISA trip. He frequently asked the locals to pose for him, and with his charming personality, they usually agreed. It is well done and a value at this price.
