Local street scenes were Burkhart’s specialty. He masterfully captures the crisp, dry air of autumn as well as the deep blue, humidity-free sky. His compositional skill is showcased in this painting. It is one of the better examples you will find and from the latter part of the period considered most desirable by collectors.

A gentleman by the name of Don Schumacher lived in the apartment depicted here on Brunson Avenue, just north of Broad St. on the east side of Columbus. His vintage Rolls-Royce was a fixture at the curb and drew attention from residents and passersby alike. Here is another outstanding example of Burkhart capturing ‘life’ as he saw it in his eastside neighborhood. Burkhart had a fascination with machinery in general and cars in particular. One may wonder if these automobiles were in use or derelicts, since WWII forced strict gas rationing across the nation. Regardless, this is a well-executed painting that is a great example of his work from his most important period.

Spring Green is a delightful rendering of a rural scene with a farm, rhythmic trees, and a field emerging from winter’s cold. It is one of a limited number of works he created using pastels. This is one of the better examples we have had the pleasure of examining over the years, and it further demonstrates Burkhart’s versatility as an artist.
