Jaeger Gallery

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Houses on Hill - Tunis’

Oil on canvas, 29 ½ x 47 ½ in. Signed, lower left. Excellent condition.

Price: $5,500

This large-scale painting exemplifies Burkhart’s ability to take a busy, colorful landscape and render it in a manner that is full of vitality and aesthetically pleasing. Some of his best ISA work was done during the trip in 1965. It was highly thought of by Karl Jaeger and he chose to include it in the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition in 1970. It is noted as number 137 in the exhibition catalog and is reproduced with a half page color plate.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Ferry Boat, Caspian Sea’

Oil on canvas, 19 x 23 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Price: $3,750

This is a wonderful rendering of a ferry boat on the Caspian Sea that Burkhart painted while serving as artist-in-residence on the International School of America trip in 1966. The work was included in the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970 and is noted as #143 in the exhibition catalog.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘West Berlin – April 1960’

Oil on canvas, 27 ½ x 39 ½ in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Price: $2,750

Burkhart was a student of history, and a trip to Berlin would not be complete for him without taking time to paint the ruins from repeated Allied bombings during WWII. This scene was likely painted close to the Berlin Wall. His choice of somber earthy colors reminds us of the ravages of war. Hard shadows evoke memories of the destruction that rained down upon the Third Reich during the last months of the war.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Farm – New Albany, Ohio’

Oil on canvas, 22 x 27 in. Signed lower right, ‘Emerson C. Burkhart.’ Excellent condition.

Price: $4,950

Here is another very solid depiction of a Central Ohio farm located in New Albany, Ohio. Although it is undated, the treatment of the sky, tree line in the background, and emerging vegetation in the foreground and middle ground clearly places it in the realm of rural landscapes he executed in the early 1950s. This painting is an outstanding value at the price offered and should be strongly considered by anyone looking to acquire a very good work of this genre.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Gahanna, Ohio Farm -1952’

Oil on Masonite, 24 x 36 in. Signed lower right, ‘Emerson C. Burkhart’, Excellent condition.

Price: $4,950

Bucolic farm scenes were a favorite subject matter for many artists, and Burkhart was no exception. As the son of a farmer, Burkhart had a fondness for the country and especially farms. Some of his best rural landscapes were produced in the early 1950s. This is clearly one such example.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Melman Hotel - Stockholm’

Oil on canvas, 40 x 32 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Price: $2,950

Burkhart traveled to Stockholm with the ISA in 1966. He noted in his correspondence that Stockholm was one of the cleanest and most attractive cities he visited during this particular trip. On this day, the light and shadows outside his hotel were playing in such a manner to provide wonderful contrast that is evident in this painting. He expertly uses the artist’s device to draw your eye from the foreground to the vanishing point at the lower left, where the road seems to disappear.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Portrait of a Spanish Lady’

Oil on canvas, 39 x 32 in. Signed lower left. Excellent condition.

Price: $3,750

While in Spain on the ISA trip of 1963, Burkhart painted two distinguished portraits of a Spanish lady and man. It is not clear whether they were related, but both were painted in the same location with the same door as a background. Each is an outstanding example of Burkhart’s mastery of portraiture. In this work, the deep blue dress dazzles against the off-white door in the background. The flesh tones in the face are complementary to the other colors in the painting.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Shahjahan Market – India’

Oil on canvas, 28 x 40 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Price: $4,950

This is one of Burkhart’s best efforts in all the years he traveled with the ISA. India is well known for its bustling markets and overcrowded conditions. He has captured not only the chaos of daily life in India but also their vibrant use of color in most everything—cars, architecture, decoration, and more. Shahjahan Market is one of the few paintings that was included in Michael Hall’s book on Burkhart, Emerson Burkhart – A Painter’s Song of Himself, pg. 140, and the Burkhart retrospective exhibition in 1970 at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, noted in the catalog as number 135.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Back Yard, July 17, 1943’

Oil on canvas, 18 x 26 in. Unsigned but with session slashes and dated by the artist’s hand, verso. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Some of Burkhart’s most treasured paintings depict landscapes and street scenes around Central Ohio. His best works in this genre were painted during the 1940s and early ’50s. This is a wonderful example of the backyards behind the homes in Burkhart’s Eastside neighborhood, Woodland Park. There are very few examples of this quality that come to the market. You should consider this a rare and exceptional opportunity to own such a work.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Landscape with Mosque - India’

Oil on canvas, 24 x 34 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Painted in 1965 while on an ISA trip, this work evokes a sense of the vastness of the Indian continent. Colorful in its depiction, Burkhart has captured the bright tropical setting and dense flora in a very pleasing manner.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Texaco Station’

Oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in. Signed lower left ‘EB ’69’, Excellent condition.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Lady in Striped Vest (Lois Anderson)’

Oil on canvas, 39 ½ x 32 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Lois Anderson was a student on one of the ISA trips. Like many of her peers and locals in the cities on the itinerary of the ISA, they readily agreed to sit for Burkhart. The artist has created a sympathetic rendering of the sitter as a bright young lady with a proper attitude. Although we can’t be sure of this location, it appears to be at one of the Mediterranean Coastal locations favored by the ISA. This colorful work is very reasonably priced.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait Fishing’

Oil on canvas, 36 x 24 in. Signed lower right ‘58. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart was an avid fisherman and spent many hours fishing at local lakes, especially Hoover Reservoir. Although not specifically identified as being painted at this location, it is a good bet that this is where he is depicting himself. What strikes us is the excellent expression he presents as he waits with anticipation to see the large fish that is obviously on the other end of his line. It is one of the best self-portraits we have seen of Burkhart from the late 1950s when this work was done. This painting is listed as number 103 in the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Professor Hubert – Ohio Wesleyan University’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in. Signed upper left Emerson Burkhart ‘57’. Unframed, Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart painted a variety of portraits over the course of his career. His subjects included the famous (Carl Sandburg, Marilyn Monroe) and many notable Columbus men and women of the mid-century, including academic figures such as Professor Hubert. Although we don’t know if this was a commission, we do know that Burkhart graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. Perhaps Professor Hubert was a young instructor at the time Burkhart attended OWU in the mid-twenties.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Lady in White Blouse’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in. Unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Although not identified, the subject was likely an individual Burkhart encountered while on an ISA trip. He frequently asked the locals to pose for him, and with his charming personality, they usually agreed.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Pheasant’s Cottage – Wikemikong Ontario’

Oil on canvas, 11 x 14 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

During the last summer of his life, Burkhart traveled to visit an Indian Chief he befriended in Northern Ontario. In exchange for lodging, Burkhart agreed to fish in the small lake next to the house and provide the family with a fresh catch of the day. He spent several weeks there and produced a number of works, including several paintings of the iron stove in the Chief’s kitchen, two of which are also offered here, as well as one that was his last large-scale painting prior to his death. That particular work is featured in Michael Hall’s authoritative monograph on Burkhart, A Painter’s Song of Himself. This is a small gem that would be a great addition to anyone’s collection of Burkhart works.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘East Main Street - Columbus’

Oil on canvas, 21 ½ x 32 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart was inspired to paint life as he saw it. He clearly favored street scenes as one of his favorite genres and painted these throughout his career, beginning while he was in college at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware. This is one of the last street scenes he painted prior to his death, and it’s appropriate that it was just blocks from his home on Woodland Ave.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Cityscape - Warsaw’

Oil on canvas, 28 x 39 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Many Eastern European cities of the post-WW II era, especially those within the Communist Bloc, were rebuilt without much architectural flair or imagination. Such subject matter can be a challenging assignment for even the most accomplished artists. Burkhart works around the drab surroundings and captures the essence of Warsaw with the clever synergy of mass transit and people, engaged in movement at a major intersection in the Polish capital. This dynamic painting was executed while on the ISA trip of 1966, his last with the group.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Stove in the Kitchen, Canada’

Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. Signed upper left. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This is one of three paintings Burkhart rendered of the great iron stove in the kitchen of Mrs. Pheasant, an Indian Chief’s wife in Wikemikong, Ontario. Burkhart spent a large portion of his last summer there. The stove represented all that was good in Emerson’s world. Although antiquated, it served its purpose with dignity and predictability. Burkhart was an Environmentalist before anyone ever coined the phrase. He abhorred planned obsolescence and society’s increasing desire to succumb to Madison Avenue’s ad blitzes for the newest products available. This particular version of the stove was the only one of the three displayed in the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970. It is listed in the catalog as number 158.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Oil Rigs – Morrow County, Ohio’

Oil on canvas, 18 x 30 in. Signed lower right, ‘E. Burkhart’, Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Ohio was ground zero for the oil and gas boom of the 1960’s. Many wells were drilled relatively close to Columbus, and Burkhart made it his business to paint several renditions of this subject matter during this period. This is an opportunity to own a work that depicts an important part of Ohio’s economy during the mid-century.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Loading Docks with Cranes’

Oil on canvas, 34 x 44 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This is another colorful, large-scale work Burkhart was likely inspired to paint due to its unique perspective high above the road, with interesting subject matter in the line of Cranes at the Docks below. This painting was created in 1966 while in Stockholm on the ISA Trip of 1966.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Old Woman at Stove, Canada’

Oil on canvas, 36 x 47 ½ in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Above, we mentioned the three Stove works that Burkhart painted while at the Pheasant’s Home in Wikemikong, Ontario, in the summer of 1969. This is the last of the paintings that included Mrs. Pheasant along with her Stove. It is a grand painting and one of Burkhart’s last large-scale efforts before passing away in the fall of 1969.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait with Brush in Hand’

Oil on canvas, 39 x 28 in. Signed upper right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

While in Poland on the ISA Trip of 1966, Burkhart had time to render several self-portraits. This and a smaller version, while wearing the same shirt, were the two best he produced that year. Burkhart does a great job of capturing his impish but sincere personality in this version of his many self-portraits. This may be one of the best available on the market today at this price.

Emerson Burkhart – Self-Portrait as a 'Bald-Headed Man'

Oil on canvas, 24 x 18 in. Unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart experimented with several different depictions of himself over the years. This is the only example of such a work without his familiar crop of thick white hair. Although undated, it was likely painted around 1965–1966.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait with Plaid Shirt’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in. Signed upper left. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Another interesting self-portrait is this example of Burkhart expressing himself as a wildly dressed eccentric, painted in 1967. This particular work made the cut and was exhibited at the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970. It is listed in the catalog as number 146.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait with Open Mouth’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

In one of the more outlandish self-portraits he painted, Burkhart treats Himself in this close-up with an expression of surprise or perhaps overconfidence while arguing with someone we cannot see. His mastery of detail and bold, confident use of paint further illustrate His ability to render the human face with emotion.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait with Nude in Background’

Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in. Unsigned and unframed. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This is one of the few self-portraits Burkhart painted with other elements included in the work. We estimate this example was painted around 1960.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait as a Guru’

Oil on canvas, 22 ½ x 19 in. Signed upper right ’66.  Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart was curious about Hippies and the Counterculture Revolution of the Vietnam Era. Although he was never a serious follower, he was sympathetic to society’s ills and the need to challenge convention and support those who were strong in their convictions to change the world for the better. In this painting, he fancies himself as a long-haired guru, who is looked upon as a sage advisor in tune with contemporary challenges.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait with a Full Face’

Oil on canvas, 14 x 10 in. Unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

One of the iconic late-period Self-Portraits that was included in the Burkhart biography authored by Michael Hall is this work. He rendered himself as if he imagined he might look if overly nourished and a bit portly. What strikes us are his eyes, soulful and without energy. Is it simply a coincidence that he only had several months to live when he painted this self-portrait?  It was also selected for the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970 and is noted in the catalog as number 153.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Self-Portrait Standing by a Stream’

Oil on canvas, 36 x 24 in. Unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

A man of many moods and expressions, Burkhart takes time to show us he may be a bit malnourished and punctuates this with a soft scowl. This work was likely painted in the early 1950’s and compares favorably with other works of the period.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Young Asian Girl in Scarf’

Oil on canvas, 14 x 18 in. Unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Burkhart painted many individuals while traveling with the ISA overseas. This work is a charming depiction of a Southeast Asian woman while on one of these excursions. It is in excellent condition and ready to hang.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Figures in Landscape’

Oil on canvas, 22 x 28 in. 1941, unsigned. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

During the late 1930s and early 1940s, Burkhart was still attempting to find his artistic voice and devoted time to exploring themes that aligned with his interests, such as Medieval history and Christian art produced by the masters of the Middle Ages. There are very few examples of works such as these, and they almost never come to market. You should view these as “must-have” examples for Burkhart collectors who desire to own important works that span the entirety of his career.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Mythology Figures’

Oil on canvas, 30 ½ x 24 in. Signed lower right 1941. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This is one of two Medieval genre scenes offered here that are rare and highly desirable. We recommend either of these paintings available here, as they represent the only examples of his works of this style and from this period that have become available on the market in many years.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Two Girls on Street’

Oil on canvas, 22 x 32 in. Signed lower right ‘59. Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This work was painted in Boston prior to the departure of the faculty and students on the first ISA trip in 1959. Although the identities of the women are unknown, they may be students who participated in the first global journey. It may well be the painting noted as Street, Boston (number 113) in the Burkhart Retrospective Exhibition held at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1970.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Two Autos’

Watercolor on arches paper, 18 x 24 in. Signed lower right. Excellent condition.

Local street scenes were Burkhart’s specialty. He masterfully captures the crisp, dry air of autumn as well as the deep blue, humidity-free sky. His compositional skill is showcased in this painting. It is one of the better examples you will find and from the latter part of the period considered most desirable by collectors.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Rolls Royce on Brunson Avenue’

Oil on canvas, 42 x 50 in. Signed lower right, ‘E. Burkhart’, Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

A gentleman by the name of Don Schumacher lived in the apartment depicted here on Brunson Avenue, just north of Broad St. on the east side of Columbus. His vintage Rolls-Royce was a fixture at the curb and drew attention from residents and passersby alike. There was no way that Burkhart would miss the opportunity to paint this iconic automobile, especially since it was less than a mile from his home.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Two Autos - 1943’

Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. Signed upper left ‘Emerson Burkhart 43’, Excellent condition. Exhibited: Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, Paintings by Emerson Burkhart, A Retrospective Exhibition, November 6, 1970 – January 6, 1971. Catalog #38

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Here is another outstanding example of Burkhart capturing ‘life’ as he saw it in his Eastside neighborhood. Burkhart had a fascination with machinery in general and cars in particular. One may wonder if these automobiles were in use or derelicts, since WWII forced strict gas rationing across the nation. Regardless, this is a well-executed painting that is a great example of his work from his most important period.

Emerson Burkhart – ‘Spring Green’

Pastel on paper under glass, 18 ½ x 22 in. Signed lower right, ‘Emerson Burkhart.’ Excellent condition.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Spring Green is a delightful rendering of a rural scene with a farm, rhythmic trees, and a field emerging from winter’s cold. It is one of a limited number of works he created using pastels. This is one of the better examples we have had the pleasure of examining over the years, and it further demonstrates Burkhart’s versatility as an artist.
