Weaver Two
Emerson Burkhart – 'Rear of House on Broad'
1942, oil on canvas, 30 x 36, oil on canvas, signed lower right, “emerson c. burkhart”.
Price: $7,400
Columbus scenes were Burkhart’s bread and butter. ‘Rear of House on Broad St’ represents one of his larger and more regal efforts painted during the war years. Burkhart spent an exceptional amount of time on this painting, with 27 sessions catalogued on the back of the canvas. The large trees and vine-laden trellises were staples in many of the yards in this part of Columbus. Exhibited at the Emerson Burkhart retrospective exhibition, 1970, Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts (now the Columbus Museum of Art), catalog #31. Very good condition.
Emerson Burkhart – 'Gahanna'
1955, 29 x 36, oil on canvas, signed lower left, “e. burkhart”.
NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Gahanna represents one of the most exceptional landscapes Burkhart ever produced. His mastery of light, shadow, and detail are all on full display with this great painting. It is housed in a massive Burkhart-built frame. The owner of this collection, Charles Weaver, was himself a painter and, in fact, painted side by side with Burkhart when this work was produced. Weaver passed along to his daughter a story noting that Burkhart, at the last minute, decided to include in his composition the old paint cans he found along the street. Very good condition.
